Monticello looked unstoppable Tuesday night against the Black Knights. Monticello constantly attacked the goal and rarely let the ball go past midfield. The Mustangs were led by Caroline Kaminski and Reese Murray, who each scored two goals. The Mustangs were aggressive early, drawing three corners in the first quarter, but they were all well-defended by CHS. Charlottesville Senior Goalkeeper Church McLean worked hard on defense, nabbing eleven saves on the night. Junior Midfielder Campbell Murray evaded the defenders and set up Caroline Kaminski, who snuck one past McLean for the game's first goal. In the second quarter, Haedyn Barnes dropped a perfect ball to Reese Murray, who scored to make it 2-0. Seven minutes later, Kaminski ripped one into the left corner of the goal to make it 3-0. Kaminski was very active, drawing corners and handling the ball well on offense on top of her two goals. After the seventh corner for MHS, Jane Robinson smacked one through to make it 4-0 just before halftime. Monticello featured a stifling defense that kept the ball from going anywhere near the goal. When it did go past midfield, Defenders Phoebe Rebhorn, Caroline Culbreath, and Disha Patel promptly sent it back the other way. CHS made a run to the goal midway through the third, but Goalie Phoebe Strazzullo kicked it out of bounds for a save. Later, Senior Attack Haedyn Barnes scooped one high in the air past the goalie for a sweet goal that made it 5-0. In-between quarters, Gannon Murray and the rest of the student section tuned in live to watch Aaron Judge blast his 62nd home run, breaking Roger Maris' record for the most in a season. It was a historical moment that we were all excited to see live. The game was capped-off by Reese Murray's second goal of the game. The goal came off the 10th corner by Monticello. Ari Romero-González got the hockey assist, making a nice pass to Lucy Getacho, who got the field hockey assist that ended the game in a 6-0 slaughter. Monticello looked solid in the win. Star players Kendall Gibson, Amelia Lewis, and Jane Robinson made it impossible for the Black Knights to get anything going on offense. They stole the ball to set up Kaminski, Barnes, and Murray, who did the brunt of the scoring. The Mustangs move to 8-3 on the season, facing a home contest with District-leading Albemarle on Thursday.
