Monticello gave Covenant (17-6, 8-0 Region) a run for their money on Wednesday at home. The Eagles were scalding hot coming into the game, winners of their last seven.

1st Set

The Mustangs started strong, going up 3-0, but Covenant had consistent momentum after that, leading for most of the first except for a 13-13 tie. The home team found themselves in a 24-18 hole, one point away from a first-set defeat. Led by Katie O’Connor serving, they strung together four consecutive points before losing the first set, 25-22.

2nd Set

Seniors Sophie Koch and Lyndsey Stemland led the charge for Monticello, each recording eight kills. These two highlighted an exciting rally where the Mustangs dug out multiple attacks and finished off the point with a spike by Koch. Covenant went up 8-4 before a furious 9-2 run by MHS. The score remained stagnant, reaching 18-18 before Covenant pulled away and won by three.

Covenant made it very difficult for the MHS defense, leading to a dominant third set and a 21-13 advantage. With O’Connor serving (2 aces on the day), Monticello almost stormed back, going on an 8-4 run, but ultimately fell 25-21.
