MHS Volleyball keeps it close in loss to tough Covenant team

Monticello gave Covenant (17-6, 8-0 Region) a run for their money on Wednesday at home. The Eagles were scalding hot coming into the game, winners of their last seven.
1st Set
The Mustangs started strong, going up 3-0, but Covenant had consistent momentum after that, leading for most of the first except for a 13-13 tie. The home team found themselves in a 24-18 hole, one point away from a first-set defeat. Led by Katie O’Connor serving, they strung together four consecutive points before losing the first set, 25-22.
2nd Set
Seniors Sophie Koch and Lyndsey Stemland led the charge for Monticello, each recording eight kills. These two highlighted an exciting rally where the Mustangs dug out multiple attacks and finished off the point with a spike by Koch. Covenant went up 8-4 before a furious 9-2 run by MHS. The score remained stagnant, reaching 18-18 before Covenant pulled away and won by three.
3rd Set
The Eagles were aggressive the whole match, constantly sending fireballs to the other side of the net. Libero Sammi Deitsch was consistent on defense, notching double-digit digs. Covenant made it very difficult for the MHS defense, leading to a dominant third set and a 21-13 advantage. With O’Connor serving (2 aces on the day), Monticello almost stormed back, going on an 8-4 run, but ultimately fell 25-21.

The Mustangs (7-10, 5-7 District) look to bounce back against Orange on Thursday before moving into a rivalry showdown with Western Albemarle and Senior Night against Wilson Memorial.
